Things To Know About Fairy Tale Books For Adults

By Marissa Velazquez

It is usually considered that fairy tales tend to be stories for children. Traditionally, though, there is a much more adult tone to them. Even with the light-hearted nature, today, a lot of authors are writing fairy tale books for adults. There are a number of different varieties, here, and they all have their own way in which they are more for adults than children.

At the forefront, here, different themes comes into play. One very common version is one that has a lot more blood and gore than usual, whether that usual is a specific tale or a more general take on the genre. Both childhood fears and adult fears can be invoked, here. For the childhood fears, there is still the presence of creeping monsters.

These nightmares live in the shadows or under the bed. Since they are, nonetheless, important to the nature of this kind of story, they still have presence. Alongside them, however, the adult fears now have emphasis. They are present in a way that they would not be for children. Both more subtle threats and things such as the loss of children, themselves, are things that come up, here.

Things tend to be implied, more, too, since an adult reader will usually pick up on things that a child would not. On the other hand, the brutality of a situation is never left to the imagination of the reader. If a character is thought to be bleeding, then they will bleed. The topics of an adult fairy tale will often be more complex references to real life events.

Perhaps these will be allusions to things such as illness and war, in a way that the reader has to find more frank. There will often be, as well as gore, a lot of sexual references in these stories, as well. That would, of course, be very inappropriate for something in a story meant for children. These might be actual sex scenes in the book, or it could just be jokes and subtle references.

This can happen frequently due to the fact that a lot of these stories revolve around romance. There is another thing, here, in the form of humor. This kind of story is often thought to be a good way to show comedy, particularly satire. This might be a send up of the common tropes that we are familiar with, a poke at the genre, itself. For many adults this is an enjoyable take on favorite childhood stories.

It might be that this is even taken further, with the stories used as a way to lampoon something. For example, one common target, here, tends to be politics. It is often the case that the joke comes from the idea that many character archetypes can be seen to mirror real power structures. History, as well, is common, here, particularly since these stories are often very archaic and can be looked at, this way.

These stories might not even be comedic and, instead, they might be told in a fashion that is far more realistic. This refers to both the place and the time of their origins. There may not be the common magical aspect to these fairy tale books for adults, but there is also a variety out there.
