The urban fantasy genre is not really that new to the world of writers. There has always been a strong group of people that see the magical possibilities of the contemporary world around them and try to incorporate it in their writing style. The Jill Kismet series is an example of this writing style using a contemporary urban fantasy background within the story.
Most urban fantasy novels are basically placed in a real world urban type setting that anyone could easily recognize as being like the one they live in. Within this urban world hidden magical components are often incorporated that drive the flow of the story while remaining hidden from average people. Some times the setting requires magic and its various possibilities to be accepted by society. This however, is not the norm for many novels.
The story's plot often revolves around a female protagonist that faces many obstacles while coming to terms with their background and identity. There is often a romantic sub-plot as well that provides an insight to the character's strengths and weaknesses. Many times it ultimately proves to be a central point for the character when deciding what path to take to better understand themselves.
The book Night Shift follows this basic formula. It is the first novel in the Jill Kismet series by the author Lilith Saintcrow. She is probably most well known for her Dante Valentine female bounty hunter novels and while it does have a few similarities to them, it does have some refreshing differences.
Jill is a bran new creation living in a modern world most people could relate to. It is also set in a considerably darker world with darker subtext involving forces of evil and good. There are several monsters and villains lurking around every corners that she battles called hellbreed. They typically pray on innocent people and Jill's life goal is to protect them while destroying the hellbreed.
To do this she uses the typical assortments of knives, swords and guns that any self respecting demon hunting good guy would have. She also wears light leather armor which protects her from being hurt. Added to these is a demon mark branded on her that she bartered with the top hellbreed in her city for. It adds several superhuman powers to her so she can go and do more than a regular person.
As you read deeper into the book you realize that Jill is a female version of a whiskey drinking Rambo, though her motives and actions are often more centered around vengeance instead of justice. This plays into the idea of good and evil and if it is more a choice or something you are just born into. Written in the first person narration, readers can ponder this idea as Jill's past is slowly revealed through flashbacks and self questioning sequences within the story.
Overall Night Shift like most of the Jill Kismet series stories is a fast paced book to read and has more than enough action going on to keep people turning pages. If you are searching for a good book to read, pick it up. For sure, you will not regret it.
