Bathroom Books And Other Clutter: Tips For Reducing

By Serena Price

Every now and then we all come to a point where we feel overwhelmed by the clutter in our living spaces. Unless you keep constantly on top of clearing things out, eventually something will pile up. It may be bathroom books, tacky picture frames, an old Beanie Baby collection; we all have something we could stand to get rid of. Since no one wants to become a hoarder, here are a few tips for clearing out the unwanted clutter in your home.

1. Throw things away. This is the most effective way to alleviate clutter, yet also usually the hardest. Often, we have trouble parting with things because they hold sentimental value, or because we feel that getting rid of them would be a waste. But everyone has things they can live without, and chances are, some of the things cluttering your home are broken or useless. Throw those things away.

2. Make use of storage space. Whether you use you basement, attic, or closets, or rent out a storage locker, this can be a very effective method of clearing out your home. Take inventory of your things, and mark down the ones you have not used or touched in three months. Chances are, all of those things can go into storage, clearing out the spaces they currently occupy.

3. Have a yard sale. Or a garage sale, or a stoop sale... Whatever your regional terminology dictates. You may feel better about getting rid of your stuff if you can earn a little bit of money in the process. Also, this will feel less wasteful. Perhaps someone else can get some use from the things you no longer need. Having a sale could be fun and profitable.

4. Give things away to a charity. Many thrift stores and resale shops not only sell used items at reasonable prices, but also give their profits, or at least a portion of them, to good causes. Most commonly, clothing is donated to these shops or charity drives, but other things may also be useful. If you have excess toys, appliances, dishes, or blankets, they may be great things to donate.

5. Hand down baby items. When you have children, you wind up with many years worth of clothing and household items that you can no longer use, especially when you have had your last kid. Luckily, there are always new friends and family members preparing to have children. Consider giving away the cribs, clothing, and other items that your kids have outgrown.

6. Get Organized! You may be unable to sell, store, throw away, or donate you things, but it is still possible to create less clutter in your home. Consider purchasing some storage containers and installing shelves to help make sure that you don't have too much stuff lying around on the floor or disorganized.

Take the time to figure out a way to reduce clutter in your home. You do not want to become buried under bathroom books, ceramic figurines, or any other unnecessary items that can overrun your living space. Use these tips to help you get your possessions under control.
